How European players reach the NBA

Rules checked · Numbers updated · All European players in the NBA

Of the 64 European players on CourtNations, 58 were drafted (37 in the first round) and 6 went undrafted. The typical player was 19 when he was drafted.

Who can enter the draft

The age rules are written in calendar years, not birthdays: a player born on 31 December 2004 was automatically eligible for the 2026 draft.

Deadlines (2026 draft as an example)

The league sets the dates each year. In 2026 an international early entrant had to declare by 24 April and could withdraw until 13 June, and the draft was held on 23 and 24 June. A player can be drafted at most twice if he does not sign.

Draft and stash: staying in Europe after being picked

A drafted player does not have to sign right away. The team that picked him keeps his NBA rights while he plays in Europe, and his contract there does not count against that team's salary cap. This is how a player like Vasilije Micic, drafted in 2014, could sign with the NBA nine years later. To bring a player over, the NBA team usually pays part of a buyout to his European club; the CBA limits how much of it the team may pay. An undrafted player who was eligible is a free agent and can sign with any team.

Do they need U.S. citizenship?

No. Foreign players work in the U.S. on a P-1A (athlete) or O-1A (extraordinary ability) visa. For a P-1A, USCIS asks for a contract with a major U.S. sports league or team and a written consultation from a labor organization. The first stay is limited to five years and the total to ten.

Questions

How do European basketball players get into the NBA?

Most are drafted: an international player is automatically eligible in the calendar year he turns 22, and can enter earlier if he is at least 19 that year and declares for the draft. A drafted player may stay in Europe while the team that picked him keeps his NBA rights. Undrafted players can sign with any team.

How old must a European player be to enter the NBA draft?

He must turn 19 during the calendar year of the draft. At 22 (again by the calendar year) an international player is automatically eligible; before that he has to declare as an early entrant.

Can a EuroLeague player sign directly with an NBA team?

Yes, if he is eligible for the draft or already went through it. If he is under contract with a European club, that contract normally has to be bought out first; the CBA limits how much of the buyout the NBA team may pay.

Do European players need U.S. citizenship to play in the NBA?

No. Foreign players work on a P-1A (athlete) or O-1A (extraordinary ability) visa. For a P-1A, USCIS asks for a contract with a major U.S. league or team and a written consultation from a labor organization; the first stay is capped at five years, the total at ten.

How old are European players when they are drafted?

Among the 58 drafted players on CourtNations the median age on draft day was 19; the youngest was 18 and the oldest 24.

Is it normal for a European player to go undrafted?

It happens: 6 of the 64 players on CourtNations were never drafted. 37 of the 58 drafted players went in the first round.
